You wouldn't run a marathon without stretching first. Likewise, you shouldn't take your SUV on a 500-mile summer road trip without checking its vitals.
Summer in the Hudson Valley brings brutal heat and high pavement temperatures that can stress even the most reliable engines. Before you load up the family and head out on the Taconic State Parkway, ensure your vehicle is prepped and ready for the journey.
Don't let preventable mechanical issues interrupt your vacation. Our Acura-certified technicians recommend checking these five crucial components before you hit the road.
Summer heat is brutal on engines. Topping off your engine coolant is absolutely necessary to prevent overheating during long highway stretches. Additionally, inspecting your AC refrigerant levels and replacing the cabin air filter ensures your passengers stay cool and breathing clean air, no matter how hot it gets outside.
Hot pavement causes the air inside your tires to expand rapidly. Improperly inflated tires are far more likely to suffer a blowout in the summer heat. We verify your tire pressure matches the manufacturer's cold-weather spec and check tread depth to ensure you have maximum grip during sudden summer thunderstorms.
Driving through mountainous areas like the Catskills or the Adirondacks requires heavy braking on steep declines. We thoroughly inspect your brake pads, rotors, and brake fluid to ensure you have reliable, fade-free stopping power when navigating winding valley roads.
Road trips mean sustained high speeds, which requires clean, fresh oil to keep engine parts lubricated. Furthermore, if you are hauling a heavy load, your transmission fluid is working overtime. Fresh fluids prevent excess friction and heat buildup.
Extreme heat can actually be worse for your battery than extreme cold. High temperatures can cause battery fluid to evaporate, leading to internal damage and terminal corrosion. A quick diagnostic test guarantees your SUV will start up immediately after a long weekend at the campsite.
Planning to haul a camper or boat this summer? Towing puts extra strain on your transmission, engine, and brakes. Make sure you know your vehicle's limits and have the right equipment installed before you hit the boat ramp.

Hot pavement causes the air inside your tires to expand rapidly. Properly checking and adjusting your tire pressure prevents over-inflation blowouts and ensures optimal fuel efficiency for long highway drives.
Yes. Towing increases the thermal load on your engine and transmission. It is essential to check your transmission fluid and ensure your cooling system is functioning perfectly before hauling heavy loads in the summer heat.
We recommend replacing your cabin air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, but it's especially important to check it before a summer road trip. A clean filter ensures your AC runs efficiently and keeps pollen and road dust out of the cabin.
